Metal
which is extracted from mobile phones is quite an ancient technology.
However, the process that is practiced now will have ample room for
improvement. Electronic products are complicated and they contain
materials from varied material types. Materials are placed in an
integrated manner inside the phone and it is not easy to segregate
them during the recycling process. On the other hand, each of these
group of metals are different from each other in terms of composition
and structure. The variety of metals is also great in different
mobile phones.
The
products not only vary in structure but also in recycling economics.
Some of the used mobile phones contain huge amounts of metals which
later generates profit and value. These metals are treated specially
in waste treatment facilities. Sometimes, products are manufactured
with materials without any reselling value which ends up in recurring
cost for recycling. Product design is also an important factor is
determining how efficient the recycling process is along with the
recycling cost. In fact, all these factors have contributed in
getting rid of old manufacturing systems which used brominated flame
retardants(BFRs)
and lead.
A
Single System is Impossible
Due
to the complexity and variety in materials, it is difficult to have a
single treatment process for all. This influences the revenue of the
recycling operators. All these mean that there are few systems in
place for most processing systems. As the amount of products are low,
automation cannot be done thus stagnating the level of treatment. To
improve this system, separate collection and treatment of mobile
phones should be arranged which might increase the overall logistics
cost but it will definitely end up in higher economic and
environmental value.
Higher
amount of precious metals are separated from lower amount of precious
metals. However, while recycling 100% recycling is done which leads
to recovery of energy or material; nothing is wasted.
Getting
a material to recycle properly demands a perfect logistics. However,
that does not happen because the materials are burned and metals
recovered. Sometimes, metals cannot even be recovered as they are
burned using wrong methods for burning. This causes health risk to
the people living in close proximity. Escaping laws, the e-waste
reaches developing countries which is difficult to monitor. Actually,
this brings to fore the loophole regarding the system of delivering
e-waste. Trade
in cash for used LG phone after
doing
some amount of research on the system and the system provider. There
is no point in losing the resources and also harm the environment.
